Why PRP and GFC, and why now?
Hair fall is one of the most common reasons patients come to a dermatologist in Lucknow — and one of the most misunderstood. Most people reach for shampoos, oils, and over-the-counter serums first, losing months while the thinning quietly progresses. In pattern hair loss, follicles do not disappear overnight. They shrink, or miniaturise, growing finer and shorter hair with each cycle until they eventually stop. The window where those follicles can still be revived is exactly the window PRP and GFC work best in.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and GFC (Growth Factor Concentrate) are regenerative treatments that use the healing signals already in your own blood. A small blood sample is processed to concentrate its platelets and growth factors, which are then injected into the scalp. There, they stimulate the dermal papilla — the engine room of each follicle — improve blood supply, and extend the active growth phase of the hair cycle. Because the material comes from your own body, there is no risk of allergy or rejection.
At the Aliganj clinic, these injections are never offered as a standalone quick fix. Dr. Kanchan first establishes why your hair is thinning — pattern hair loss, a thyroid or iron issue, post-illness shedding, or a combination — and PRP or GFC becomes one considered part of a plan, not the whole plan.
Who PRP and GFC can help.
These treatments are most effective when there is still living follicle to work with. They are commonly used for:
Early to Moderate Pattern Hair Loss
Male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) — thinning at the crown, a widening parting, or a receding hairline — responds well when treated early, before follicles are fully lost.
Diffuse Thinning & Increased Hair Fall
Generalised thinning where the scalp is becoming more visible, and the daily hair fall on your pillow, comb, or shower floor has clearly increased over months.
Telogen Effluvium Recovery
Shedding that follows illness, high fever, childbirth, crash dieting, or major stress. Once the trigger is addressed, PRP or GFC can help the recovery gather pace.
Support for Other Treatments
As a partner to medical therapy (such as minoxidil), or to strengthen and support existing hair before or after a hair transplant.
PRP vs GFC — what's the difference?
Both start with your own blood, and both deliver growth factors to the scalp. The difference is in how they are prepared:
- PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) concentrates your platelets and the natural growth factors they release. It is the well-established, extensively studied option.
- GFC (Growth Factor Concentrate) is a newer refinement. A specialised process isolates a higher, purer dose of specific growth factors, with fewer red and white blood cells in the final concentrate.
- In practice, GFC can mean a more standardised dose per session and, for some patients, slightly fewer sessions to reach the same point.
- Neither is universally "better" — the right choice depends on your scalp, your diagnosis, and your goals, which is what the consultation is for.
Whichever is used, the principle is the same: your own biology, concentrated and delivered where the follicles need it, by a dermatologist rather than a technician.
What to expect during treatment.
A single session takes around 30 to 45 minutes. A small sample of blood is drawn from your arm, much like a routine blood test, and placed in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets or growth factors. While that is prepared, a numbing cream is applied to your scalp for comfort.
The concentrate is then injected into the scalp at the level of the follicles across the thinning areas. Most patients describe only a light pressure or tingling. There is no significant downtime — you can drive yourself home and return to work the same day, avoiding vigorous exercise, hair washing, and direct sun for the first 24 hours.
A typical course is 4 to 6 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. The first thing most patients notice is that hair fall slows, usually within 4 to 6 weeks. Visible density and new growth build gradually over 3 to 6 months. Maintenance sessions every 4 to 6 months help protect the gains, because pattern hair loss is an ongoing process, not a one-time event.
